Before You Start

This plan assumes you have a smartphone (iPhone or Android) and access to the internet. You don't need to download anything new for the first three days. Everything you need is already on your device.

Why a 7-Day Plan?

Learning about Artificial Intelligence can feel overwhelming when you try to absorb everything at once. The news makes it sound complicated. Your grandkids make it sound like you should already know it. And the internet is full of jargon that assumes you're a computer scientist.

This plan is different. Each day has exactly one small task. It takes 5–15 minutes. There's no test, no pressure, and no judgment. By the end of the week, you'll have hands-on experience with five different AI tools — and you'll understand what all the fuss is about.

Day 1: Ask Your Voice Assistant a Question

Your phone has a built-in AI assistant — Siri on iPhone, Google Assistant on Android. Today, you're going to ask it one question. That's it.

Try This

Say: "Hey Siri, what's the weather this weekend?" or "OK Google, how far is it to the nearest pharmacy?" Listen to the response. Notice how it understood your question and gave a relevant answer. That's AI processing your voice in real time.

If it didn't understand you perfectly, that's normal. AI is good but not perfect. Try speaking clearly and naturally, as if you're talking to a person standing three feet away.

Day 2: Search Your Photos by Keyword

Open your phone's photo app. Look for the search icon (usually a magnifying glass). Type a word like "beach," "dog," "birthday," or "flowers." Your phone will show you all the photos that match — even though you never labeled them.

How? AI analyzed every photo in your library and identified what's in each one. It recognized faces, objects, locations, and even text in images. This is one of the most practical AI features you already have — and most people don't know it exists.

Day 3: Notice Your Email's Spam Filter

Open your email app and look for the Spam or Junk folder. Open it and scroll through. You'll see dozens (maybe hundreds) of messages that were automatically filtered out — scam offers, phishing attempts, promotional junk.

Your email's AI learned what spam looks like by analyzing billions of emails. It catches suspicious messages before you ever see them. Today, just appreciate that this AI has been quietly protecting you for years.

Day 4: Try ChatGPT for the First Time

This is the big one — but it's easier than you think. Go to chat.openai.com on your phone or computer. You can create a free account with your email address. Once you're in, you'll see a text box. Type a question, just like you'd ask a friend.

Starter Questions to Try

"Explain what a deepfake is in simple terms." Or: "Give me a simple recipe for chicken soup." Or: "Write a birthday message for my granddaughter who's turning 10." Or: "What are three good stretches for lower back pain?"

Read the response. Notice how natural it sounds. Then remember: this is AI predicting the most likely helpful response based on patterns. It's not "thinking" — it's pattern-matching at an incredible scale. It can be wrong, so always verify important information with a doctor, lawyer, or other trusted source.

Day 5: Ask ChatGPT a Follow-Up Question

Go back to ChatGPT and continue your conversation from yesterday (or start a new one). This time, ask a follow-up question. If you asked about chicken soup yesterday, try: "Can you make that recipe for just two people?" or "What can I substitute for celery?"

The key insight today: AI remembers the context of your conversation. You don't have to repeat yourself. It's like talking to someone who was listening the whole time. This makes it genuinely useful for exploring topics, planning, and problem-solving.

Day 6: Use AI Translation

Open Google Translate on your phone (it's free and pre-installed on most Android phones; iPhone users can download it). Type or speak a sentence in English and translate it to any language. Try Spanish, French, or Japanese. Then use the speaker icon to hear the translation spoken aloud.

AI-powered translation has improved dramatically in the last two years. It's not perfect for poetry or legal documents, but for travel, basic communication, and curiosity, it's remarkably good. Imagine being able to communicate in any country in the world using just your phone.

Day 7: Reflect and Decide Your Next Step

Congratulations — you've now used five different AI tools in one week. Take a moment to reflect on what you learned:

  • Which tool did you find most useful?
  • Which one surprised you the most?
  • Is there something you'd like to explore further?
  • Did anything make you uncomfortable or raise questions?

There's no wrong answer. The point of this week wasn't to make you an expert — it was to give you firsthand experience so you can form your own opinions about AI based on reality, not headlines.
